Where do you celebrate your 40th without bothering the neighbours upstairs, without booking a village hall lit by neon strips, without taking a taxi home at midnight? The question comes up every week in our inbox. Renting a private birthday cottage for the weekend solves all three problems at once: the house is yours, the garden is yours, you sleep on site. Here is how we approach it at Ciel, in Southern Burgundy, where our house hosts a group of strictly fifteen people for a 30th, 40th, 50th or 60th birthday weekend with friends and family.

This article is deliberately practical. A timed checklist from D-90 to D-2, party ideas that actually work, the equipment that matters, and an FAQ for the questions that always come up. No empty promises, no marketing flourish: just what you need to prepare a birthday weekend that goes well.

Why a private birthday cottage rather than a hall

Renting a cottage for a birthday changes the nature of the celebration. A rented hall empties out at 2 a.m. with a Sunday morning inspection. A private cottage stays open all weekend. You arrive on Friday, leave on Sunday or Monday, and take your time. Above all, you sleep on site: no designated drivers to organise, no guests glancing at their watches.

The neighbour question

This is the first concern of guests who call us for their 40th: “Can we make noise?” Honest answer: we are in a rural setting, very close to several houses. Music in the lounge, a long dinner around the big table, drinks in the garden until midnight: yes, no problem at all. An outdoor sound system at full volume until 4 a.m.: no, never. This rule protects the neighbours and, incidentally, protects your security deposit.

The good news is that the house is built so the fun stays inside without anyone needing to push sound onto the lawn. The 50 m² lounge has proper acoustics, the covered terrace allows for a long dinner, and the hot tub takes over for the late-night conversations.

Capacity 15, strictly

One essential point up front: 15 guests maximum, including the birthday boy or girl. Not sixteen, not eighteen, no airbeds in the lounge. This limit is non-negotiable and also applies to guests “who are just coming for dinner”. The cottage is sized for fifteen: six bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen equipped for fifteen settings. Beyond that, the house loses its comfort, plain and simple.

If your party is heading towards twenty-five or thirty guests, we are not the right place, and we will tell you straight away. At fifteen, however, a private birthday cottage is exactly the right tool.

Checklist: organising a birthday in a cottage, step by step

A successful party is prepared in four steps. Here is the framework our guests use most often.

D-90: setting the frame

At three months out, you lock in everything that’s scarce. Specifically:

• Book the cottage on firm dates (30% deposit at confirmation)
• Confirm the precise list of 15 guests (not a loose list of 22 to be trimmed later)
• Define the format: surprise or not, theme or not, 2 or 3 nights
• If you want a food truck or a caterer for Saturday evening: now is when you book them
• Warn faraway guests so they can buy their tickets

D-30: locking in the providers

At one month out, things get concrete:

• Validate the menu with the caterer or private chef
• Order the wines (the Côte chalonnaise 30 minutes away will deliver easily)
• Prepare the dinner and party playlist
• Source a decent Bluetooth speaker if you don’t have one
• Book any add-on entertainment: discreet mobile DJ, cocktail host, close-up magician
• Set the room plan: who sleeps where, who needs the ground floor

D-15: the fine logistics

At two weeks out, the details:

• Confirm exact numbers to providers (last-minute cancellations or additions)
• Plan the Saturday breakfast and Sunday brunch shopping
• Buy or rent decoration (string lights, candles, “40” balloons if you must)
• Print any quiz, game, guest book
• Prepare the surprise gift, letter, or slideshow
• Settle the cottage balance (payment due 30 days before arrival)

D-2: final preparation

At two days out, breathe and tick boxes:

• Do the shopping (soft drinks, snacks, breakfast)
• Load the car with deco, clothes, gifts
• Confirm the arrival time at the cottage (check-in from 4 p.m.)
• Tell the caterer the exact delivery time
• Send one last message to the group with directions

That’s it. No sixty-line checklist: a birthday in a cottage is not a wedding for a hundred. It’s a weekend with friends, with a party in the middle.

Cottage equipment that matters for a birthday

A few concrete elements of the house that change the experience.

The outdoor hot tub

The hot tub is the favourite feature of autumn and winter birthdays. It seats six at a time, runs all year, and naturally becomes the HQ for late-night conversations. Plan extra towels if everyone wants their slot over the weekend.

The covered terrace and 900 m² garden

The covered terrace shelters a large table where the fifteen guests fit in one go. It’s the backbone of the party: it’s where the birthday dinner happens, where the Sunday brunch happens, where the long late-afternoon conversations happen. The 900 m² garden (partially fenced) hosts drinks, the pétanque court, and an optional food truck parked at the gate.

The 6 bedrooms for the 15

Six bedrooms across two floors, three bathrooms with showers and bathtubs, separate WCs. Master bedrooms on the ground floor, twin and double rooms upstairs. Everyone sleeps in a real bed in a real bedroom. That’s what distinguishes a private birthday cottage from a holiday let that claims 18 sleeps with sofa beds everywhere.

The equipped kitchen

Oven, hobs, large fridge, dishwasher, crockery and glassware for fifteen. A caterer can work comfortably, or you cook yourselves if the party is simpler. Everything is ready to run from arrival.

Party ideas that actually work

No need to tick every box. One or two activities are enough to give a birthday some shape.

Food side

• Food truck parked at the gate: wood-fired pizzas, local burgers, charcuterie boards. Budget €15 to €25 per person.
• Private chef for Saturday dinner only: three-course menu with wine pairing, service included. Budget €60 to €90 per person depending on standing.
• Caterer delivered cold: the middle option, you handle service but not the cooking.
• Local cheese and charcuterie board: the sober and excellent version when you’re in Burgundy.

Atmosphere side

• Discreet mobile DJ: allowed indoors only, no outdoor sound system. Several local DJs work in dinner-music + lounge-dancefloor mode.
• Collaborative playlist: each guest adds three tracks to a shared playlist the day before. Always works.
• “Do you really know the birthday person” quiz: about thirty questions, mixed teams, silly prizes.
• Photo slideshow projected on the lounge wall: 40 years in 40 pictures. Prepare in advance, launch after dessert.

A birthday in a cottage isn’t just about the evening. It’s also Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. A few ideas:

• Beaune market on Saturday morning (25 min) then lunch in town

Celebrating your 40th in a group: what to avoid

A few classic traps we see often.

Inviting “just in case”. At fifteen, every spot counts. Inviting three people you barely know to avoid offending is to deprive yourself of a close friend who would have really counted.

Trying to do everything on Saturday evening. The meal, the slideshow, the DJ, the gifts, the hot tub, the games: if you pack it all into four hours, nobody enjoys any of it. Spread across the weekend.

Underestimating Sunday breakfast. Often the favourite moment of the stay: plan enough bread, pastries, juice, coffee. Fifteen people eat a lot when they wake up after a party.

Forgetting that you have to tidy up. Sunday evening or Monday morning, the house has to be returned in order (dishes, bins, furniture back in place). Hand out tasks in advance rather than carrying everything on the day.

FAQ — Birthday cottage in Burgundy

Can we be more than 15 for the birthday evening?

No. Capacity is 15 maximum, and that limit also covers guests “who don’t sleep on site”. It’s a non-negotiable rental condition, tied to the neighbours, insurance, and how the house is sized.

Can we bring in a DJ?

Yes, indoors only. A mobile DJ setting up in the lounge with a reasonable speaker is perfect. An outdoor PA or a speaker cranked up in the garden is excluded. Several local DJs know the format and respect the levels.

Until what time can we party?

No hard cut-off at midnight sharp, but we ask that the volume comes down from midnight and that doors and windows are closed from then on. The hot tub and lounge take over after that, and the evening can stretch late without disturbing anyone.

Is the cottage suitable for a birthday with children?

Yes. Several bedrooms work for family configurations, the garden is partially fenced, and the pétanque court entertains children as much as adults. Tell us the number of children at booking so we can plan the bedroom split.

How many nights should we book?

2 nights minimum, 3 nights recommended for a comfortable birthday: arrive Friday evening, party Saturday, brunch and departure Sunday. The 3-night version means arriving relaxed and recovering on Sunday.

Do you accept pets?

No, the cottage does not accept pets, even small ones. It’s a matter of allergies and upkeep. The cottage is also non-smoking indoors (a smoking area is provided on the terrace).

Is there a kitchen for baking a cake or hosting a caterer?

Yes. The kitchen is fully equipped: oven, hobs, large fridge, dishwasher, crockery for 15. You can equally bake the birthday cake yourselves or host a caterer or private chef. No commission on outside providers.

What does a weekend cost?
