What to do around Verdun-sur-le-Doubs: 12 ideas for a Southern Burgundy weekend

Verdun-sur-le-Doubs is one of Burgundy’s best-kept secrets. Sitting at the confluence of the Saône and the Doubs, this large village in Saône-et-Loire is an ideal base from which to explore Southern Burgundy without wearing yourself out on the road. Just 5 minutes from our cottage in Ciel, you are right in the middle of a golden triangle: Beaune to the north, Chalon-sur-Saône to the west, Louhans to the east. Here are 12 concrete ideas to fill a weekend or a week of activities in Saône-et-Loire, on foot, by bike or by car.

1. Wander through Verdun-sur-le-Doubs (on site)

Let’s start with the basics. Verdun-sur-le-Doubs deserves a proper stroll: its quaysides, the Saint-Jean church, the Maison du Blé et du Pain (a gourmet museum dedicated to pochouse, the area’s emblematic dish), and above all the river confluence as seen from the viewpoint. The Monday morning market draws in local producers: goat cheeses, charcuterie, seasonal vegetables. Allow 1 hr 30 for a relaxed visit.

2. Cycle the Voie Verte (5 min)

The Southern Burgundy Voie Verte cycle path runs just a few kilometres from the cottage. It is one of the finest in France: 100 km of safe cycle track between Givry and Cluny, through vineyards and Romanesque villages. For a half-day, set off from Chalon or Givry and ride to Buxy. Bike rentals available in Chalon-sur-Saône.

3. Kayaking and paddleboarding on the Saône (5 min)

In summer, the Saône becomes a playground. At Verdun-sur-le-Doubs and Seurre, several water-sports bases offer kayak, paddleboard and canoe hire by the hour or half-day. The perfect activity for a family day out or a light team-building session. The water is calm, the banks shaded, and you can stop wherever you like for a picnic.

4. Beaune and its hospices (45 min)

Beaune is the unmissable capital of Burgundy wines. Not to be missed:

• The Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu) with their famous glazed-tile roof
• The Saturday morning market on Place Carnot — one of the finest in France
• A tasting at a wine merchant on rue Maufoux or a visit to Bouchard Père & Fils
• The Climats walking trail around the town

5. Chalon-sur-Saône and the Niépce museum (30 min)

Chalon-sur-Saône is the closest major town to the cottage. Go for:

• The Nicéphore Niépce museum, dedicated to the inventor of photography (free entry)
• Old Chalon with its timber-framed houses
• The Sunday morning market on Place Saint-Vincent
• The banks of the Saône at sunset

6. The Louhans market halls (30 min)

The Louhans halls are an exceptional Historic Monument: 600 m of covered wooden galleries lined with stone arcades. The Monday morning market (held since the 14th century) is a must: Bresse poultry, fattened hens, capons, snails, honey, cheeses. It is the quintessential “deep Burgundy” outing that we love.

7. Cluny and its abbey (1 hr)

Hard to visit Saône-et-Loire without stopping at Cluny. The abbey, the largest religious building in the West until the 18th century, is worth the trip for its history and immersive visit (3D reconstructions among the ruins). The village is charming, perfect for lunch on a sunny terrace.

8. The Côte chalonnaise wine route (30–45 min)

Between Chagny and Buxy, the Côte chalonnaise is the lesser-known little sister of the Côte de Beaune. You will find excellent wines (Mercurey, Rully, Givry, Montagny) at gentle prices. Several estates welcome walk-in tastings on Saturdays. Suggested itinerary:

1. Mercurey — emblematic wine-growing village
2. Rully — beautiful château and cellars
3. Givry — said to be Henri IV’s favourite
4. Buxy — the cooperative cellar to finish

9. Dole and the “little Venice of the Jura” (50 min)

A real gem. Dole, birthplace of Pasteur, is just 50 minutes from the cottage. The tanners’ quarter, nicknamed “little Venice of the Jura”, is best explored on foot along the canals. The Notre-Dame basilica dominates the town. For lunch, try rue de la Bedugue.

10. Tournus and the Saint-Philibert abbey (40 min)

Tournus is a jewel of Romanesque art. Its Saint-Philibert abbey-church is one of the most impressive in Burgundy, with its mighty narthex vaults. The village is lively, perfect for a stroll and a meal. Several Michelin-starred restaurants are based here (Le Greuze, Aux Terrasses).

11. Dijon and the owl trail (1 hr)

If you are staying 4–5 days, Dijon deserves a day. The Owl Trail (a self-guided walk) crosses the historic centre: Palace of the Dukes, the covered market halls, rue des Forges, place Émile Zola. The capital of Burgundy is also a feast for the table: pochouse, jambon persillé, époisses cheese.

12. Relaxing in the cottage hot tub (0 min)

And then there are the days when you want to do nothing. The cottage’s private hot tub, the terrace, a game of pétanque, a nap under the lime tree. That is also why people come to Southern Burgundy: to slow down.

How to plan it

For a long weekend (3 days): Verdun + Voie Verte or kayaking (day 1), Beaune and its wines (day 2), Louhans or Cluny (day 3).

For a week: add Dole, Dijon, Tournus, and a proper lazy day at the cottage with the hot tub and pétanque.

For a corporate retreat: alternate a working day at the cottage with a team-building outing (kayak, wine tasting, bike ride).
